Thiabendazole is belongs to the family of benzimidazole. It is used as a parasiticide to control roundworms, hookworms, and other helminth species which attack wild animals, livestock and humans. The precise mode of action on the parasite is unknown, but it may inhibit the helminth-specific enzyme fumarate reductase and impairing glucose transferring and ATP-synthesis.

Thiabendazole is vermicidal and/or vermifugal against Ascaris lumbricoides ("common roundworm"), Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworm), Necator americanus, and Ancylostoma duodenale (hookworm), Trichuris trichiura (whipworm), Ancylostoma braziliense (dog and cat hookworm), Toxocara canis and Toxocara cati (ascarids), and Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm). Its effect on larvae of Trichinella spiralis that have migrated to muscle is questionable. Thiabendazole also suppresses egg and/or larval production and may inhibit the subsequent development of those eggs or larvae which are passed in the feces.

It is a fungicide and used primarily to control mold, blight, and other fungally caused diseases in fruits and vegetables..

Thiabendazole is applied to some bananas, including Chiquita brand bananas 'to ensure freshness'.

Thiabendazole is also a chelating agent, which means that it is used medicinally to bind metals in cases of metal poisoning, such as lead poisoning, mercur poisoning or antimony poisoning.

 

Function :
1. Biochemistry Inhibits chitin synthesis.
2. Mode of action Acts mostly by ingestion; larvae are unable to moult, and also cease feeding.
3. Uses Insect growth regulator for control of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera larvae on cotton, maize and vegetables; and citrus whitefly and rust mites on citrus fruit, at 10-50 g/ha.
4. Also for the prevention and control of flea infestations on pets.Formulation types EC.
5. Compatibility Not compatible with pesticides with alkaline reaction(lime sulfur, copper).
As Fungicide:
1. It is used primarily to control mold, blight, and other fungally caused diseases in fruits (e. G. Oranges) and vegetables;
2. It is also used as a prophylactic treatment for Dutch Elm disease.
3. Thiabendazole is a systemic benzimidazole fungicide used to control fruit and vegetable diseases such as mold, rot, blight and stain.
4. It is also active against storage diseases and Dutch Elm disease.
5. In livestock, thiabendazole is also applied to treat roundworms.
6. Thiabendazole is also used medicinally as a chelating agent to bind metals.
As Parasiticide:
As an antiparasitic, it is able to control roundworms (such as strongyloidiasis), hookwarms, and other helminth species which attack wild animals, livestock and humans.

Precautions
