Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infections. This includes bone and joint infections, intra abdominal infections, certain type of infectious diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, skin infections, typhoid fever, and urinary tract infections, among others. For some infections it is used in addition to other antibiotics. It can be taken by mouth or used intravenously.
Ciprofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV,enzymes necessary to separate bacterial DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division.
Ciprofloxacin is used to treat a wide variety of infections, including infections of bones and joints, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, malignant otitis externa, respiratory tract infections, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, anthrax, and chancroid.
Ciprofloxacin only treats bacterial infections; it does not treat viral infections such as the common cold. For certain uses including acute sinusitis, lower respiratory tract infections and uncomplicated gonorrhea, ciprofloxacin is not considered a first-line agent.
It is suitable for mild and moderate infections caused by sensitive bacteria, including respiratory system infection, urinary system infection, reproductive system infection, skin tissue infection, intestinal infection and so on.
The bactericidal effect is good, and the antibacterial activity against almost all bacteria is 2 to 4 times stronger than that of norflacin and enoxacin. Staphylococcus aureus has antibacterial effect.
Ciprofloxacin has a wider clinical use than norflacin. In addition to urinary tract infections, intestinal infections, gonorrhea, etc., it can also be used to treat influenza bacteria, E. coli, pneumoniae, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Bone and joint infections, skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, sepsis, etc. caused by Profidenia, Morganella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae, Citrobacter freundii, Staphylococcus (including methicillin-resistant strains), etc. . The oral preparation of this product is compatible with norflacin; intravenous administration can be used for the treatment of heavier infections, such as enterobacteriaceae bacterial sepsis, lung infection, abdominal cavity, and biliary tract infection.
