What's Selamectin? Selamectin (also known as cilamectin) is produced by fermentation of a new strain of genetically recombinant Streptomyces avermitilis. The mechanism of action of selamectin is the same as that of other avermectins, on the one hand, it can be used as an agonist of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) triggering the release of presynaptic GABA, which then causes an increase in the membrane's permeability to Cl¯. On the other hand, the drug can open the glutamate-controlled chloride channel, which increases the membrane potential hyperpolarisation and thus blocks nerve signal transmission, resulting in rapid, fatal and non-Chemicalbook spastic neuromuscular paralysis and death. ¯ permeability increases leading to hyperpolarisation of the membrane potential, thus blocking nerve signalling and causing rapid, lethal and non-spasmodic neuromuscular paralysis and death of the worm. Since trematodes and tapeworms do not possess the GABA neurotransmitter and glutamate-controlled Cl¯ channels, this class of drugs has no repellent effect on them. Invertebrates have binding sites in the peripheral tissues, whereas mammals have binding sites in the central nervous system, and because of the blood-brain barrier the drugs rarely enter the brain tissue, the drugs are safe for most mammals. Application & Function of Selamectin With a much improved safety profile and good oral and injectable results, Selamectin is a topical and topical insecticide that primarily targets adult fleas, filarial worms and mange in pet dogs and cats. |
