What is Pyrantel pamoate? Pyrantel pamoate Pyrantel pamoate (Pyrantel Embonate) is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic used to treat a number of parasitic infections. Acts by inhibiting cholinesterase, causing strong contraction of the worm muscles and resulting in spasmodic paralysis; but does not cause roundworm commotion. It is a depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agent with significant nicotinic-like activity, which also inhibits cholinesterase and causes accumulation of acetylcholine, leading to spasmodic paralysis of the worms and their expulsion from the body; in addition, it depolarizes individual cells of the worms, increases the frequency of peak potential issuance, and also increases muscle tone, causing the worms to lose their voluntary activity. |
