What's thiopental sodium?  Sodium thiopental, molecular formula C11H17N2NaO2S, is a light yellow powder, deliquescent, easily soluble in water, soluble in alcohol, garlic-like odor, and unstable in nature. Thiopental is an intravenous general anesthetic; it can also be used for anticonvulsants.
Application & Function of thiopental sodium 1. Thiopental sodium can induce general anesthesia, with short duration of action, but quick onset. Because of its insignificant analgesic effect, it is rarely used alone, but it can be repeatedly injected in small amounts for compound general anesthesia; 2. Sodium thiopental can control convulsions, and intravenous injection has a quick effect, but it is not lasting. It can only relieve the emergency, and the symptomatic treatment must be aided by benzodiazepines or phenytoin sodium; 3. Thiopental is generally effective in correcting the increase in intracranial pressure caused by general anesthetics, but it is not effective for pathological intracranial hypertension, such as intracranial space-occupying lesions, cerebral edema, and acute brain injury. 4. Thiopental can be administered by intramuscular injection for basic anesthesia in children
