What is Acarbose? Acarbose, an organic compound with the chemical formula C25H43NO18, is an α-glucosidase inhibitor. It is a complex oligosaccharide with a structure similar to that of oligosaccharides, and this non-oligosaccharide "pseudo-oligosaccharide" can compete with oligosaccharides at the brush border of the cells in the upper part of the small intestine and bind to the α-glucosidase enzyme reversibly to inhibit the activities of various α-glucosidases such as maltase, isomaltase, glucoamylase and sucrase. It inhibits the activity of various α-glucosidases such as maltase, isomaltase, glucoamylase and sucrase, slowing down the decomposition of starch into oligosaccharides such as maltose, maltotriose and dextrin into glucose, and slowing down the decomposition of sucrose into glucose and fructose, thus slowing down the intestinal glucose absorption and thus alleviating postprandial hyperglycemia and lowering the blood sugar level. |
