Sulfadiazine is an organic compound with a molecular formula of C10H10N4O2S. It is white or off-white crystal or powder, odorless and tasteless, and gradually darkens when exposed to light. Almost insoluble in water, soluble in boiling water (1:60), slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, insoluble in chloroform and ether, and easily soluble in dilute hydrochloric acid, sodium hydroxide solution or ammonia solution. Melting point: 252~256ºC (decompose at the same time). Its sodium salt is white crystalline powder, odorless and slightly bitter in taste. It turns brown when exposed to light. When placed in moist air for a long time, carbon dioxide is slowly absorbed and sulfadiazine is precipitated. Easily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in chloroform and ether. The pH of the 10% aqueous solution is 9.5 to 10.5.
1. Sulfadiazine is the drug of choice for the prevention and treatment of meningococcal meningococcal meningitis (epidemic meningitis).
2. Sulfadiazine is also suitable for the treatment of respiratory infections, intestinal infections and local soft tissue infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
3. Sulfadiazine can also be used in the treatment of nocardiac disease, or combined with pyrimethamine for the treatment of toxoplasmosis.
