Gibberellins (GAs) are a very important class of plant hormones, involved in many biological processes such as plant growth and development. Gibberellins are named from A1 (GA1) to A126 (GA126), and the numbers follow the order of discovery. The most prominent physiological effects of gibberellins are to promote stem elongation and induce bolting flowering in long-day plants under short-day conditions.
Regarding the mechanism of action of gibberellin, the most in-depth study is its induction of starch hydrolysis in degerminated barley seeds.
