Benflumetol is a new mefloquine drug developed in China, which has a significant killing effect on both sexual and asexual bodies of Plasmodium vivax and has a good preventive effect on Plasmodium vivax. It also has a killing effect on the asexual body of falciparum malaria, but the effect is slow. It can reduce the rate of gametophytes in the blood and inhibit the development of gametophytes in mosquitoes. Trials in areas where chloroquine resistant falciparum malaria is prevalent have shown that the cure rate for chloroquine or multidrug resistant falciparum malaria is over 95%. When combined with artemether, the anti malaria effects of the two can complement each other. Benflumetol is thoroughly insecticidal and has a long-lasting effect, but the control of symptoms is slow. Artemether is quick acting, but has a high rate of reburning. Animal experiments have shown that this product has very low toxicity and no adverse reactions have been observed clinically.
