Product Description Lanolin is a very effective emollient, restoring and maintaining the moisture balance of the stratum corneum and preventing dryness and cracking of the skin, but equally importantly it does not alter the normal permeability of the skin. Lanolin has been shown to slow trans-epidermal water loss, increasing the skin's normal water retention by 10-30%. An important property of lanolin is that it can absorb twice its own weight in water, and it also has the physical property of enhancing adhesion to dry skin and forming a protective film on the epidermis. In cosmetic and pharmaceutical preparations lanolin is compatible with most lipids and waxes. Lanolin is able to form very stable water-in-oil emulsions with water by self-emulsification, and it is often widely used in this aqueous form. Lanolin is commonly used in treatments to protect infant skin and to treat mothers' sore nipples during breastfeeding. Lanolin is also used in lipstick products. However, for some people, it can cause lip irritation. |
