Genipin is the hydrolysis product of geniposide by β-glucosidase. It is an excellent natural biological cross-linking agent, which can be cross-linked with protein, collagen, gelatin and chitosan to make biological materials ( Figure 2 The cross-linking mechanism of genipin and chitin molecules), such as artificial bones, wound dressing materials, etc., its toxicity is much lower than that of glutaraldehyde and other commonly used chemical cross-linking agents. It can also be used to treat liver diseases, blood pressure, and laxatives. The results of a study at an Israeli medical center suggest that genipin can relieve symptoms of type 2 diabetes. Genipin can also be used as a fingerprinting reagent and a cross-linking agent for the preparation of immobilized enzymes.
