What is Sodium deoxycholate? Sodium deoxycholate is the sodium salt of deoxycholic acid, which is a white crystalline powder at room temperature with a bile-like odor and a strong bitter taste. Sodium deoxycholate is an ionic decontaminant, which can be used to lyse cells and dissolve proteins that are insoluble in water. It can also be used in bile lysis experiments. The principle is that bile or bile salts have surface activity, which can rapidly activate autolysis enzymes and accelerate the self-lysis of bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae |
