Glycine is an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and a combined agonist of glutamate with the potential to promote the excitability of glutamatergic NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartic acid) receptors.
Glycine (abbreviated as Gly), also known as glycolic acid, is a non-essential amino acid with the chemical formula C2H5NO2. Glycine is a component amino acid of the endogenous antioxidant reduced glutathione, which is often supplemented by exogenous supplementation during severe stress, and is sometimes referred to as a semi-essential amino acid. [1] Glycine is one of the simplest amino acids. [4]
Glycine in a solid state is a white to off-white crystalline powder that is odorless and non-toxic [2]. Soluble in water and almost insoluble in ethanol or ether. Used in the pharmaceutical industry, biochemical tests and organic synthesis, it is the simplest structure in the amino acid series, a non-essential amino acid in the human body, with acidic and alkaline functional groups in the molecule, ionized in water, with strong hydrophilicity, but it is a non-polar amino acid, soluble in polar solvents, and difficult to dissolve in non-polar solvents [3], and has a high boiling point and melting point, through the adjustment of the acidity and alkalinity of the aqueous solution can make glycine present different molecular forms.
