It is used for the treatment of herpes simplex meningitis and also for herpes zoster and chickenpox infections in immunosuppressed patients. But not for cytomegalovirus. When the dose is more than 10mg/kg a day, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, elevated transaminase, dizziness, fatigue and so on can occur. A small number of myelosuppression may occur, mainly manifested by leukopenia and thrombocytopenia. This medicine has teratogenic effect, it is forbidden for pregnant women. It should be used with caution in lactating mothers, infants and patients with liver and renal insufficiency.
