Colchicine is one of a group of macrocyclic alkaloids. Chemical formula: C22H23NO6. It is commonly found in the liliaceae plants of Jialan and Lijiangshan, with the content of 0.11% and 0.1%, respectively. Alkaloids, extracted from the plant colchicine, inhibit the formation of spindle filaments and thus delay the division of the centromere.
Colchicine is a medication most commonly used to treat gout. It is a toxic natural product and secondary metabolite, originally extracted from plants of the genus Colchicum (autumn crocus, Colchicum autumnale, also known as "meadow saffron").Adverse effects are primarily gastrointestinal upset at high doses. In addition to gout, colchicine is used to treat familial Mediterranean fever, pericarditis, and Behçet's disease.

Its present medicinal use is mainly in the treatment of gout; as well, it is being investigated for its potential use as an anti-cancer drug. It can also be used as initial treatment for pericarditis and preventing recurrences of the condition. In neurons, axoplasmic transport is disrupted by colchicine.
