Glycine (abbreviated as Gly), also known as aminoacetic acid, is a nonessential amino acid with the chemical formula C2H5NO2. Glycine is an amino acid that is a component of endogenous antioxidant reduced glutathione, and is often supplemented externally when the body experiences severe stress, sometimes referred to as a semi essential amino acid. Glycine is the simplest amino acid.
Solid glycine is a white to grayish white crystalline powder, odorless, non-toxic . Easily soluble in water, almost insoluble in ethanol or ether. Used in the pharmaceutical industry, biochemical tests, and organic synthesis, it is the simplest amino acid in the amino acid series and is not essential for the human body. It has both acidic and basic functional groups in the molecule, can be ionized in water, and has strong hydrophilicity. However, it is a nonpolar amino acid that is soluble in polar solvents, but difficult to dissolve in nonpolar solvents, and has a high boiling point and melting point, Glycine can take on different molecular forms by adjusting the acidity and alkalinity of aqueous solutions.
