The chemical name of sulfamethoxazole is N-(5-methyl-3-isoxazolyl)-4-aminobenzenesulfonamide. It is a white crystalline powder; it is odorless and has a slightly bitter taste. Almost insoluble in water; soluble in dilute test solution. It is mainly used for urinary tract infections, respiratory system infections, intestinal infections, biliary tract infections and local soft tissue or wound infections caused by sensitive bacteria.
Sulfamethoxazole as an antibacterial agent, it is particularly effective against Staphylococcus and Escherichia coli.
